About the Book

Rural–Urban Dynamics and India’s Socio-Economic Transformation is an interdisciplinary edited volume that brings together diverse research contributions exploring the evolving relationship between India’s rural and urban sectors. The book presents a comprehensive understanding of how agriculture, industry, digitalisation, employment patterns, financial behaviour, tourism, women empowerment, education, and small-scale entrepreneurship collectively shape India’s socio-economic landscape. Covering a wide range of contemporary themes, the book examines the interdependence between rural and urban economies, highlighting how resources, labour, markets, technology, and cultural exchanges flow across both spaces. It analyses critical issues such as inflation, shrinkflation, digital payments, rural employment, small-scale industries, start-ups, and the influence of urbanisation on rural socio-cultural structures. Special attention is given to the agricultural sector, the backbone of rural India, and its role in supporting urban growth through food supply, raw materials, labour, and ecosystem services.

The volume also includes research on tourism-led development, women’s participation in self-employment, SHG-based empowerment, and the economic impact of education, offering nuanced insights into inclusive growth. With studies grounded in both rural and urban contexts, the book provides evidence-based perspectives on the challenges and opportunities emerging in India’s journey toward balanced development. This edited book serves as a valuable resource for academicians, researchers, policymakers, development practitioners, economists, and students seeking to understand India’s socio-economic transitions. By integrating multiple viewpoints and empirical findings, it contributes meaningfully to ongoing debates on equitable development, sustainable growth, and the future of India’s rural–urban continuum.
